No-fault auto insurance is mandatory in the state of Michigan. You must carry your insurance card in your vehicle and show it upon request by a law enforcement officer. If you are stopped by a police officer and cannot show proof of insurance, the court may order the Secretary of State to suspend your driver license. Until proof of insurance is shown, the Secretary of State will not renew, transfer or replace your vehicle’s license plates. You may be required to prove the vehicle is insured for not less than six months and pay $50, plus any other fees required by law. Your license plates may be canceled if proof of insurance is not produced.

Michigan is a no-fault insurance state and the law requires three types of coverage:

  • First, the Bodily Injury and Property Damage minimum coverage requirement is $20,000 of Bodily Injury Liability per person up to a total of $40,000 for all persons injured in any one accident and $10,000 of Property Damage Liability. These limits are often described as 20/40/10. While the Bodily Injury and Property Damage levels of 20/40/10 are the state required minimum coverage amounts, courts often award more than these amounts and you would be liable for paying the amount not covered by your policy. To protect yourself, consider a coverage level that will fully protect you from financial loss or liability if you are at fault in an accident. The insurance industry, most consumer groups and most agents typically recommend a minimum of $100,000 of bodily injury protection per person and $300,000 per accident.
  • Second, Michigan also requires Property Protection Insurance (PPI) that will pay up to $1 million for damage your car does in Michigan to other people's property or parked vehicles.
  • Third, Michigan requires Personal Injury Protection (PIP) to cover medical and work loss costs if you are hurt in an accident.

Michigan has an automobile lemon law that protects consumers who purchase defective vehicles. A defective vehicle is one in which the same problem has not been repaired after four attempts or a vehicle that is out for service 30 days or more. The first report of the defect must be made within one year from the date of delivery to the original purchaser or lessee or during the term of the manufacturer's warranty whichever period is shorter. Consumers may be entitled under state law to a replacement or a refund of the cost of the vehicle. For more information regarding your rights under the Michigan Automobile Lemon Law, consult an attorney.
